Hydrangea Care Guide

Light

Best in partial shade — morning sun and afternoon shade work well. Too much direct sun can burn the leaves.

Water

Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Water more often in hot weather, especially for potted plants. Let the top layer of soil dry slightly before watering again.

Fertilizer

Feed every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a fertilizer high in phosphorus to boost blooming.
To change flower colour:

• For blue flowers, use acidic soil (add aluminium sulphate).

• For pink flowers, use alkaline soil (add garden lime).

Pruning

Cut off faded flowers after blooming. Don’t over-prune, especially for varieties that bloom on old wood.

Soil and Potting

Use rich, well-draining soil. Repot potted hydrangeas every 1–2 years with fresh soil.

Common Issues

Yellow leaves may mean overwatering or nutrient problems.
No flowers could be due to too much pruning, not enough sunlight, or the wrong fertilizer.
Pests like aphids or mites can be treated with organic sprays.
