Bat Plant (Tacca chantrieri)

Bat Plant (Tacca chantrieri) is one of the most striking and unusual tropical plants in cultivation, prized for its dramatic, almost otherworldly flowers. Native to the shaded understories of Southeast Asia, this species is known for its deep purple to near-black blooms, accented by long, whisker-like bracts that can extend up to 30 cm.

The plant produces broad, glossy green leaves that create a lush, tropical appearance even when not in bloom. However, it is the flower that truly defines its appeal—often compared to a flying bat, making it a standout centerpiece in any rare plant or orchid-style collection.

Best suited for growers who can provide stable conditions, the Bat Plant thrives in:

• Warm temperatures
• High humidity
• Low to medium indirect light
• Consistently moist, well-drained media

While not an orchid, it pairs beautifully with orchid collections and is especially popular among collectors of unusual, exotic species.

A true conversation piece, Tacca chantrieri is ideal for those looking to elevate their collection with something bold, rare, and unforgettable.
