Description
The Blue Mediterranean Fan palm (Chaemerops humilis var. cerifera) is native to Morocco's Atlas Mountains at elevations up to 1700 m. This botanical gem is extremely popular among palm enthusiasts beyond the tropics, boasting unparalleled resilience and adaptability. Tolerating hard frost to scorching heat, from arid droughts to moist climates, it is a highly adaptable and forgiving palm which is ideal for a wide range of climates in NZ.
However its main appeal is the breathtaking hue adorning its leaves—a mesmerizing powdery blue silver that rivals even the most coveted Brahea armata or Bismarckia nobilis.
Although it is extremely cold tolerant and able to grow in less than ideal conditions, it will do best in a warm sunny position in a rich, free-draining soil. Its versatility means it also makes an excellent container plant. The Blue Mediterranean Fan palm is native to Morocco's Atlas Mountains at elevations up to 1700 m. These young palms are approximately 9 months old in a ~12 cm recycled nursery pot. They have green foliage to begin with, but as they mature the characteristic silvery blue color of this variety begins to dominate, more so with exposure to heat and sunlight. While the green form of this palm is to be found in a few NZ gardens, this striking blue variant is very uncommon here.
Plants are carefully packed with newspaper and secured into an oversized courier box for safe sending. Can fit two plants per box for the same freight cost.
