Ultra rare in NZ, Joey palms (Johannesteijsmannia altifrons) is one of the most spectacular shade-loving tropical palms, and arguably the most beautiful of all palms when fully mature. Overall they are a medium-sized palm and completely without a trunk but their massive, show-stopping leaves (that can sometimes get up to 4 metres in length) are a true wonder of the plant world.

These large, simple (undivided) leathery, diamond-shaped leaves are pleated along their length, and have serrated edges. Famed for its unique undivided leaf shape, it's equally famous for being a slow grower, especially outside of the tropics. But patient believers will ultimately be rewarded with one of the most sought-after collector's palms the world over, as they are relatively happy growing indoors in containers, or if you're brave enough, established specimens planted outside are much hardier than you'd expect and will even tolerate light frost.

This is a must try palm for the keen grower and collector in the warmer parts of NZ.
