Description
About 2 year old Cyrtostachys renda (Lipstick Palm) seedling, currently about 11 cm tall. This is a highly sought-after tropical palm and very rare to find in New Zealand, especially as a healthy, established seedling.
Cyrtostachys renda is native to Southeast Asia, where it grows in hot, humid lowland rainforest and swampy environments. It’s famous for its vivid red crownshafts and leaf stems, which develop as the palm matures and make it one of the most visually striking palms in cultivation.
This species is slow growing, particularly at a young age, and requires consistently warm temperatures, high humidity and evenly moist conditions. It prefers bright light but should be protected from harsh direct sun while small. Rich, free-draining soil that never fully dries out is ideal.
In New Zealand, Cyrtostachys renda is not suited to outdoor growing, as it is extremely sensitive to cold, wind and low humidity. However, when established it can make an excellent potted or indoor plant, or be grown successfully in a warm greenhouse or conservatory. Because of its demanding requirements and iconic appearance, it’s especially appealing to collectors and serious palm enthusiasts rather than general garden planting.
This plant would suit someone who understands tropical palms and is looking to grow a rare and distinctive species.
