Thief Palm

Young Phoenicophorium borsigianum palms seedling, currently around 10 cm tall. This is a slow-growing and relatively rare species in New Zealand, so it’s not something that comes up for sale very often.

Phoenicophorium borsigianum is native to Mauritius, where it grows in warm, humid conditions. When mature it’s a striking palm with arching leaves and a vivid crownshaft with red-marron new fronds that slowly turn green, which is why it’s highly sought after by collectors.

This plant currently has slightly rusty or bronze-coloured leaves, which is normal for young Phoenicophorium. Juvenile plants often show reddish or rusty tones, especially while establishing or in brighter light, and this settles into greener foliage as the palm matures.

It prefers warm, frost-free conditions with bright light to partial shade, particularly while young. A well-draining soil is important, and it should be kept evenly moist without sitting wet. It appreciates humidity and benefits from shelter from strong winds. Growth is slow, especially in the early years.

In New Zealand it can be grown successfully in mild, frost-free areas, particularly sheltered coastal parts of the North Island. In cooler regions it’s best grown in a pot so it can be protected over winter or kept under cover while young. This would suit a palm enthusiast or collector who’s happy to give it a bit of extra care while it establishes.
