Carnivorous Bromeliads (Brocchinia)
These curious plants belong to the Pineapple Family and are similar to other pitcher plants such as Sarracenia in their method of trapping insects
These plants can be found exclusively in the Guiana Highlands, and are known for their slippery, waxy leaf clusters that create a pitfall for unsuspecting bugs.
Watering
Please only water me from above. I come from a tropical area where it rains a lot so feel free to get my leaves wet too. Always ensure there is water in the centre of my leaves. I don't like my feet standing in water, so please empty my tray afterwards.
Light
Partly sunny to full sun for me please.
Where to Keep Me
I can live outside on most of North Island, I just don't want to freeze in Winter. I like it warm and humid.
Dormancy
I may slow down a little when it’s colder but I will grow year-round. This way you can show me off to your friends any time you like.
Feeding
I will catch my own food, but feel free to drop something in my mouth. I love flies, spiders and any other bugs. Please do not use fertilisers on me as a lot will harm me more than they will help me.
Soil Recipe
I live in an airy acidic mix of sphagnum, peat moss, pumice, sand, vermiculite, perlite and orchid bark. If you need to repot me, please do not use regular soil, I will not survive, you can use just long fibred sphagnum.
