Temperate Sundews (Drosera) Growing Instructions

Temperate Sundews (Drosera)

These form one of the largest families of carnivorous plants and can be found naturally occurring all over the world. Even NZ has a few indigenous species.

They lure, capture, and digest insects using the stalked glands covering their leaf surfaces

Watering

Please keep my tray full with water all the time, right throughout the year. I come from areas that are always damp, like next to waterfalls, streams and swamp. I like it very wet.

It’s best to just fill my tray, my special soil mix will give me what I need.

Light

Full to part sun. The more I can tan, the better my colours.

Where to Keep Me

I love a hot day and don’t mind cold, even really cold days but I’m not a fan of being snowed on. I can live outside or inside on a windowsill.

Dormancy

I may slow down and die back when it’s colder but some of us grow year-round, please don’t think I’ve died, I am just resting. Just continue to look after me as normal.

Feeding

I will catch my own food, but feel free to drop something on my leaves. I love flies, spiders and any other bugs. Please do not use fertilisers on me as a lot will harm me more than they will help me.

Soil Recipe

I live in a mix of sphagnum peat moss and sand. Some people like to use long fiber sphagnum, the one from NZ is the best in the world I hear. If you need to repot me, please do not use regular soil, I will not survive.
