Description
Hoya obovata. Ok, we’ll admit it, Hoya obovata was initially our hoya nemesis. Every hoya collector has one hoya variety that they struggle with to begin with that others seem to love growing and grow with ease. We think this is because we over-loved it and fussed over it when it’s a hoya that just does not need any fuss. Now that we’ve learnt to ignore her and only ever water her once in a blue moon, she is a stunning performer.
The leaves of Hoya obovata are typically around 9cm x 9cm but can be larger (we have some that are 13cm x 15cm), dark green, with silver speckling / mottling. No visible veining.
Hoya obovata likes to climb and with its thick succulent leaves, it is good to offer climbing support such as a trellis. It is best to train stems when they are new shoots as the stems harder as they mature and become more difficult to train.
The flower of Hoya obovata is a very pale pinky white with a darker red centre and its perfume reminds us of roses.
Provide Hoya obovata with plenty of light and space and you will find that she grows easily. Just don’t fuss over her!
