Cliff Date Palm - Phoenix rupicola

This is a much rarer and more elegant palm compared to the common Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island Date Palm). Unlike canariensis, this species is not classified as a pest, and it is not banned anywhere in New Zealand, as it doesn’t spread aggressively in the wild and hasn’t shown invasive behaviour like canariensis.

Phoenix rupicola has a really graceful look, with softer arching fronds and a slimmer, cleaner trunk that doesn’t bulk out into a huge base. With it's refined appearance it makes a fantastic feature palm for a garden or even in a large pot. It’s also hardy and easy to grow, tolerating a range of conditions, but what really sets it apart is how rare it is to find them for sale here.

This is a great opportunity to get your hands on a palm that’s a great, NZ-friendly alternative to Phoenix canariensis, and that will only get better with age.
