Flamethrower Palm / Chambeyronia macrocarpa

Chambeyronia macrocarpa – Red Leaf / Flame Thrower Palm – approx. 35cm tall from base of plant.
Shade of red already visible on new fronds.

Young Chambeyronia macrocarpa (often called the Red Leaf or Flame Thrower Palm) for sale. This species is well known for its striking new fronds, which emerge a vivid red before gradually turning green as they mature. When a new leaf appears it creates a really distinctive display and is the reason these palms are so sought after.

Plant is approximately 35cm tall and well established in its pot, ready to grow on.

About the plant:

One of the most ornamental palms grown in subtropical gardens
Once established new leaves flush bright red before fading to glossy green
Native to New Caledonia rainforest
Eventually forms a single trunked palm with a full crown of broad fronds

Chambeyronia macrocarpa grows well in warmer parts of New Zealand, particularly Northland, Auckland and other mild coastal areas, however these make for a striking indoor plant anywhere in the country.

Best results are achieved with:

Sheltered position, protected from strong winds
Free-draining but fertile soil
Regular watering, especially when young
Part shade while small, with more sun tolerated as it matures
Protection from heavy frost
Growth is moderate once established. In suitable conditions it can eventually reach around 6–10m tall, making an excellent feature palm.
These are not commonly available in NZ, particularly at a young size, and are popular with collectors and tropical garden enthusiasts.
